That's a link to an excerpt from the book Tears of the Desert: One Woman’s Story of Surviving the Horrors of Darfur by Halima Bashir and Damien Lewis.
I'm not sure I can bear to read the whole book, so devastating is this brief account of this doctor's life in Darfur during attacks by the Janjaweed. It's truly gut-wrenching and horrifying. And a timely reminder that we are standing by while it goes on...

Curiously, I heard something to the effect of which I haven't heard again so I don't know if it is true but Global warming may be making a bad situation even worse. The report I heard, or maybe actually read, had the two groups far from friendly for many many years but with what little rains they were getting not coming at all the struggle for water has become even harder making their conflict even worse.
It's true, Beach.
