Don't we like to be fed, kept in a safe, welcoming home, entertained, and told that we're loved?

If you've seen dogs (and cats, incidentally) that aren't loved, they are not inclined to be affectionate just for food and housing. If they receive real love, they know it and return it with real love.LittleBillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04798830752072270682noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8038715.post-4638933995561626242007-02-14T00:24:00.000-05:002007-02-14T00:24:00.000-05:00Dogs are astute students of their humans. The only time they are obvious is when they come out to sniff the trousers you are pulling on; in this way they discern directly, immediately, and definitively whether your intentions are to go to work, go on a walk, or go sailing.

BTW, E., you are so linked!Vigilantehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07640246609540057997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8038715.post-77949614601417670292007-02-13T19:00:00.000-05:002007-02-13T19:00:00.000-05:00Hmm.Social parasites, hey?Never once is it mention...Hmm.

Social parasites, hey?
Never once is it mentioned that dogs are still just domesticated wolves. They didn't "evolve" to cater to humans, but rather, their loyalty and "affection" comes from the domestication of their instincts as pack animals.

Their loyalty to humans comes from us replacing another dog or wolf as head of their pack (so in a sense, we're the social parasite) and their attempts to read our moods are just logical extensions of reading the moods of a pack leader. When the pack leader is happy, the pack is happy.

My dog is anything but the dependant, affectionate pookie-mookie that one would expect a domesticated dog to be. In fact, just watching how he behaves, you would see him as a little urban wolf, opportunistic to the extreme. He stays with us because his instincts tell him that staying with his pack will help him survive.

Along with a few underlying pack rules as well, of course. Such as not biting children, not growling at the mama, barking to go out, etc.

Still, a good piece E. Got my creative juices flowing.
